JEE Main 2026 Eligibility Criteria — Who Can Apply and All Requirements Explained

JEE Main 2026 Eligibility Criteria — Who Can Apply and What Are the Requirements?

JEE Main 2026 Eligibility Criteria — Who Can Apply and What Are the Requirements?

Before you start preparing for JEE Main 2026, there is one thing you must get absolutely clear — are you eligible to appear for the exam in the first place?

This might sound like a basic question, but you would be surprised how many students and parents are unsure about the exact requirements. Some believe there is a minimum percentage needed. Others think there is a strict age limit. Some are not sure whether they can appear if they gave their Class 12 exams two years ago.

This blog answers all of those questions. We have broken down the complete JEE Main 2026 eligibility criteria in the clearest possible way — so you can plan your preparation with full confidence.

What Is JEE Main and Why Does Eligibility Matter?

JEE Main is the Joint Entrance Examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is the primary gateway for admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and several state engineering colleges across India. It is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced, which is the route to the IITs.

Understanding eligibility is not just a formality. If you apply without meeting the criteria, your application can be rejected — or worse, your admission can be cancelled even after you have secured a seat. So getting this right from the start is important.

JEE Main 2026 Eligibility Criteria — Complete Breakdown

1. Educational Qualification

The most fundamental requirement for JEE Main 2026 is that you must have passed or be currently appearing in Class 12 (or its equivalent) from a recognised board.

Recognised boards include CBSE, ICSE, and all state boards across India. Students who have completed their Class 12 equivalent from open schools recognised by the respective state or central governments are also eligible. Students who have completed a two-year Pre-University or Higher Secondary Certificate programme are eligible as well.

The key word here is “equivalent.” If you studied from a non-standard board or curriculum, the NTA evaluates whether your qualification is equivalent to a standard Indian Class 12. In cases of doubt, you should check with the NTA directly or consult an education counsellor.

2. Subjects Required in Class 12

This is where many students get confused, so let us be very clear.

To be eligible for JEE Main 2026 for the B.E. and B.Tech programmes, you must have studied the following five subjects in Class 12:

Physics, Mathematics, and any one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject, or any other subject as approved by the NTA.

The important thing to note is that Physics and Mathematics are compulsory. These two subjects are non-negotiable. Without them in your Class 12, you cannot apply for JEE Main B.Tech admissions.

For B.Arch admissions through JEE Main, the subject requirement is different — you need Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry as core subjects in Class 12, along with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks.

For B.Planning admissions, you need Mathematics in Class 12, and the aggregate marks requirement also applies.

3. Minimum Marks in Class 12

Here is something that surprises many students. For JEE Main itself — the exam — there is no minimum percentage requirement in Class 12. You can score 50% or 95% in your boards and still be eligible to appear for JEE Main 2026.

However, this changes when it comes to actual admission into NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through the JoSAA counselling process. For admission into these institutions, you need to have scored at least 75% aggregate marks in your Class 12 exams. For students belonging to SC or ST categories, this minimum is 65%.

Alternatively, you must be in the top 20 percentile of your respective board exam to qualify for admission — even if your percentage is slightly below 75%.

So the summary is: there is no minimum percentage to appear for JEE Main, but you need 75% (or top 20 percentile) to actually get admission into NIT, IIIT, or GFTI through JEE Main scores.

4. Age Limit for JEE Main 2026

This is one of the most searched questions around JEE eligibility, and the answer is straightforward.

There is no upper age limit for JEE Main 2026. The NTA removed the age cap several years ago. Whether you are 17 or 25, you can appear for JEE Main as long as you meet the other eligibility conditions.

The only age-related condition is a lower limit — you should have been born on or before October 1, 2007 to appear for JEE Main 2026 sessions. However, this is rarely an issue since most appearing students are in the standard age range of 17 to 19 years.

5. Year of Passing Class 12

This is one of the most important eligibility conditions, and one that trips up many students.

For JEE Main 2026, you are eligible if: You passed Class 12 in 2024, You passed Class 12 in 2025, or You are appearing in Class 12 in 2026.

Students who passed Class 12 in 2023 or earlier are not eligible to appear for JEE Main 2026. This rule was introduced to ensure that the exam remains competitive and that students who have been out of the academic system for several years are not at an advantage.

If you passed in 2023 and want to attempt JEE again, you will need to re-appear in Class 12 to refresh your eligibility — though this is a rare situation and you should consult with an education counsellor for your specific case.

6. Number of Attempts

JEE Main allows a maximum of three consecutive attempts. This means you get three consecutive years to attempt JEE Main.

For example, if you appear for JEE Main for the first time in 2026, you will have 2026, 2027, and 2028 as your three attempts. After that, you are not eligible to appear again.

It is important to remember that each year of JEE Main has two sessions — typically in January and April. Both sessions in the same year count as one attempt year. So even if you appear in both sessions of 2026, that is still counted as one of your three years.

7. Nationality and Domicile

JEE Main 2026 is open to Indian Nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), and foreign nationals.

There is no domicile restriction for JEE Main itself. You can be from any state in India and appear for the exam. However, some state engineering colleges that accept JEE Main scores may have their own domicile-based reservation criteria during counselling.

8. Students Already Enrolled in a Degree Programme

If you are already enrolled in a B.Tech or B.E. programme at an NIT, IIIT, or GFTI and you want to appear for JEE Main again, you are technically eligible to do so — as long as you meet the year of passing and attempt criteria.

However, you should be aware that if you secure a new seat through JEE Main, you will typically need to surrender your existing admission. The rules around this can vary, so it is always best to check with the institution and with NTA.

Eligibility for JEE Main Paper 2 — B.Arch and B.Planning

So far, we have discussed eligibility primarily for JEE Main Paper 1, which is for B.E. and B.Tech admissions. If you are interested in B.Arch or B. Planning, the eligibility requirements are slightly different.

B.Arch Eligibility

For B.Arch, you must have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. You must also have scored a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in your Class 12 exams. This minimum percentage requirement is firm for architecture admissions, unlike the B.Tech pathway.

B. Planning Eligibility

For B. Planning, the subject requirement is that you must have Mathematics in Class 12. Unlike B.Arch, chemistry and physics are not mandatory. A minimum of 50% aggregate in Class 12 is also required for B. Planning admissions.

Common Eligibility Mistakes Students Make

Over the years, counsellors at Paraakhya Education Foundation have seen students make the same eligibility-related mistakes. Here are the most common ones — and how to avoid them.

Assuming There Is a Minimum Percentage for the Exam

Many students believe they cannot appear for JEE Main if they have less than 60% in Class 11 or their pre-boards. This is not true. There is no minimum percentage required to register for JEE Main. Your Class 11 marks have no bearing on JEE Main eligibility whatsoever.

Confusing JEE Main Eligibility with JoSAA Admission Eligibility

These are two different things. You can appear for JEE Main with no minimum percentage. But to get admitted through JoSAA counselling into NITs and IIITs, you need 75% in Class 12 (or top 20 percentile of your board). Students often confuse one for the other.

Not Checking Board Recognition

If you studied from a lesser-known board or an international curriculum, always verify whether your qualification is recognised before applying. Some foreign curricula require equivalency certificates from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

Missing the Attempt Count

Some students forget that both sessions in a given year count as one attempt year. They think giving both January and April sessions means they have used two of their three attempts. They have not — they have used one year, regardless of how many sessions they appeared in.

What Happens After You Confirm Eligibility?

Once you are confident that you meet the JEE Main 2026 eligibility criteria, the next steps are registration, preparation, and eventually counselling. Here is the broad sequence:

JEE Main registration opens on the NTA website. You fill in your details, upload documents, and pay the application fee. You appear for the exam in January and/or April. Your scores are released, and you can check your percentile and rank. If eligible, you can then register for JEE Advanced. Based on your JEE Main rank, you participate in JoSAA counselling for NIT, IIIT, and GFTI admissions.

At each stage, having a clear understanding of where you stand — and what options are available to you — makes the difference between a smooth process and a stressful one.
