JEE Main 2026 Exam Pattern — Paper 1 (B.E. and B.Tech)

Mode of Examination

JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 is conducted entirely as a Computer Based Test (CBT). In other words, the exam is taken on a computer at an NTA-designated test centre. There is no pen-and-paper option for this paper.

Duration

The total duration of JEE Main Paper 1 is 3 hours. However, for candidates with benchmark disabilities, an additional 1 hour is provided as a concession. Therefore, the total duration for such candidates becomes 4 hours.

Subjects and Number of Questions

Paper 1 consists of three sections — Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each section contains 30 questions. However, not all 30 questions are compulsory. The structure within each section is divided into two parts.

Section A contains 20 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). All 20 questions in Section A are compulsory. In contrast, Section B contains 10 Numerical Value Questions, out of which you need to attempt only 5.

Therefore, the total number of questions you actually attempt is 75 — 20 MCQs plus 5 Numerical Value questions from each of the three subjects.

Total Marks

The total marks for JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 are 300. Each subject carries a maximum of 100 marks, which is consistent across Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

JEE Main 2026 Marking Scheme

For Multiple Choice Questions (Section A)

For every correct answer in Section A, you receive 4 marks. However, for every incorrect answer, 1 mark is deducted as a negative marking penalty. Therefore, an unanswered MCQ results in zero marks — neither a gain nor a loss. As a result, blind guessing on MCQs is not advisable. Only attempt an MCQ if you have a reasonable level of confidence in your answer.

For Numerical Value Questions (Section B)

For every correct answer in Section B, you receive 4 marks. Importantly, there is no negative marking for incorrect Numerical Value answers. Therefore, you can attempt numerical questions with more freedom. Even if you are not fully certain of the answer, attempting a Numerical Value question carries zero risk.
